Scotland will be hopeful of a better 2024 as international football resumes following a five-month hiatus. First off for the Tartan Army will be an away trip to Greece for the Nations League play-offs. Steve Clarke’s charges will be seeking to stay in League A after a torrid run in the group stage.
Bookies' predictions do not favor Scotland, at least for this first leg, but let’s have a look at the stats and numbers before offering a possible outcome. Scotland, playing in Group A 1, suffered a number of setbacks that saw them finish third with seven points from six matches.
Two wins in their final three matches came a bit late, as they finished a point behind Croatia. In League B, meanwhile, Greece could afford to measure themselves against England. At the end of it all, the two were tied on 15 points but Greece had an inferior goal difference.

Greece - Scotland: Form Analysis
Greece’s only defeat in the group phase was inflicted by England, at home. They will hope to avoid another such result, as Scotland can be really tricky opponents.
The hosts are a strong unit though, as demonstrated by their run in the group stage, winning five of their six matches. Those wins included one at Wembley when they beat England, and home and away wins over the Republic of Ireland.
Having also come close to qualifying for the last Euros is a sign of their strength. The loss to England in their latest home game halted a run of three straight wins, all with clean sheets.
Greece and Scotland last faced off 30 years ago.
Scotland must have rued the timing of the last international break. After a poor run of results, they had just started getting back to track before the break.
In their first match of 2025, the Scots will hope to carry on with their form at the close of 2024. They are coming from three unbeaten matches, with two being wins.
Beating Poland and Croatia, ended a run of eight winless matches for the Scots. Two wins only away from home in the last nine matches, however, doesn’t make for a good reading.

Greece & Scotland Squad Analysis
Vangelis Pavlidis will once again be the man to watch for the Greeks. The forward has been on fire for Benfica, scoring 10 times in Primeira Liga and has four assists.
His magic has also rubbed at the national team level and in this competition. He has two goals in the Nations League, all derived from nine attempts at shots, 33% of which were on target.
He has an expected goals return of 1.37 and could be a handful for the visitors.
Greece will miss skipper Tasos Bakasetas, who is injured.
For the Scots, Scott McTominay has in recent years emerged as a key player. His move to Napoli at the start of the season has seen a rebirth in the midfielder and he has chipped in with a few important goals.
Whenever Scotland seems stuck, he has time and again come up with solutions. There’s nothing to suggest after scoring 11 in 58 matches for Scotland, he is done.
The midfielder has two goals in the Nations League and is odds on to score in this game, coming with an xG of 2.10.

Our Greece vs Scotland Prediction
Scotland had picked up well towards the last international break but that momentum is now disrupted. Head to a tricky away game in Greece, this doesn’t look very interesting for the Scots. Greece have been on a much more powerful run and have definitely done better at home.
Their only home losses at home in the last 15 matches were against very strong sides – England, Netherlands and Spain. Meanwhile, Scotland’s away run isn’t great and this is likely to end in disappointment. Our prediction for Greece v Scotland is that Greece wins the match.
Greece vs Scotland - Other Interesting Predictions
Over 2.5 goals
While Scotland haven't returned the best results from their away matches, they rarely go without scoring. This is the reason each of their last four away matches had over 2.5 goals.
They meet a Greece side that is also on a good scoring run. As we expect an end to end game, we are definitely assured of goals. Our second prediction is, therefore, for over 2.5 goals.
