Former European champions Greece will look to move a step closer to Euro 2024 when they host Kazakhstan. This playoff semi-final at the OPAP Arena in Athens will take place on Thursday. The winner of this tie advances to the play-off final, where Georgia or Luxembourg will be the opponents. Greece finished third in a competitive Group B, behind France and the Netherlands, with 13 points from eight matches. However, thanks to their Nations League performance, where they won Group C2, Greece has made it this far. The 2004 European Champions have started performing well under Gus Poyet, winning 11 of the 19 matches they played and drawing two. Poyet has already spoken about their dream Euro final appearance, where they will be clubbed with Turkey, Portugal, and Czechia if they go on to reach the Euro finals. Kazakhstan have never qualified for a major final, but they are perhaps going through their best phase of football. Like their hosts, it is through their Nations League performance that they are playing here. Seven wins from their last ten matches indicate a team that could give the Greeks a run for their money. Interestingly, they played a friendly last week, when they defeated Turkmenistan 2-0, while Greece hasn’t played in four months.
