After a dramatic end to the group stages in women’s football at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the quarters’ draw is out, and Great Britain will be up against Australia. Team GB managed a top placed finish in Group E after a 1-1 draw with Canada, who were also contesting for a top finish. Australia on the other hand, progressed as one of the best third placed finishers after a gritty draw with powerhouse USA in Group G. Team GB haven’t been the most exciting performers at the competition but their solidity has been admirable and they will be favorites here. They won their opening two matches, securing qualification before drawing with Canada and they had scary moments in their final group game. It took a big deflection on Caroline Weir’s shot to see Team GB equalize in the 85th minute, having trailed for 30 minutes. While they had their shortcomings, which should be addressed as the team advances, the fact that they had two clean sheets and scored in all their group games is a positive.

Australia made a calculated risk, which finally paid off, as they employed a great defensive strategy to lock out a star-studded USA in their last group game. In the end, the two teams drew 0-0 and Australia avoided the dreaded Netherlands in the quarter finals. The Matildas’ fate was somehow helped on by other teams’ results, especially the Netherlands’ 8-2 whacking of China, which ensured Australia finish third. A win, a loss and a draw were their returns from Group G and they will hope for a better defensive output in the quarters after managing just one clean sheet in the group stage. They started off with a 2-1 win over New Zealand before falling 4-2 to Sweden and drawing with USA. They survived scary moments against USA though they also had their periods, but against Team GB, it will be all or nothing and they will hope for a good showing.
