Girona’s fine run in La Liga will conclude with a home game against relegated Granada on Friday. The two sides face off with Girona assured of third place while Granada finishes in the bottom two. If there was a surprise package in La Liga this season it has to be Girona, who have secured a maiden Champions League appearance. The target on Friday will be to avoid two straight home defeats for the first time this season. The only other time they suffered a home defeat this season was against eventual champions Real Madrid. With the gains from their third season in La Liga, Girona can only target greater things when they get a first taste of European football. A big season awaits and Girona will want to finish this on a high.

Granada will not have a lot of positives to pick from this campaign. Going into the final day of the season, they are only in search of their fifth league win. It has been a tough season for the visitors, who only outscored the bottom side. They also only conceded less than the side at the bottom. A result of their poor campaign is that their fate is sealed, even as they head to the final week of the season. Granada have managed just 21 points so far, a massive 57 less than their hosts’ tally. There’s no question about the gulf in quality between the two; Girona strolled to a 4-1 win over Granada in the reverse fixture. That was the first meeting between the two since 2011. Their run ahead of this game strengthens their placing as underdogs, having lost each of the last four matches. In their last 18 matches, Granada managed just two wins, though they avoided defeat in six of the games. As they return straight to the second tier, there isn’t much to write about Granada’s away league form. They failed to win any of their league matches on the road, only bagging three points from the 18 matches.
