Morocco will make their FIFA Women’s World Cup debut on Monday when they take on Germany in Melbourne. The two nations have been pooled in Group H alongside Colombia and South Korea. Germany have qualified for all nine editions of the World Cup since 1991. They have won the tournament twice, back to back in 2003 and 2007, and have finished as runners-up once in 1995. But since their last triumph, Germany have regressed and made the semifinal once in 2015. They were eliminated in the quarterfinals in 2019 in France. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s charges will hope to challenge for the title this year but their form coming into the tournament leaves much to be desired. Morocco, ranked 72nd in the world, are one of eight nations making their FIFA World Cup debuts in this year’s tournament. They qualified for the competition after finishing as runners-up in last year’s African Cup of Nations. The Northern African nation will seek to emulate their men’s team that made history by reaching the semifinals last year in Qatar. But first, they need to work on their attack, which has hindered them in recent outings. The Atlas Lionesses are without a win in their last five fixtures. In this unwanted run, they have failed to score a single goal. They have been defeated three times in this period including in their last outing where they fell 1-0 to Jamaica. Morocco’s last two victories however came against European nations Bosnia-Herzegovina and Slovakia. They scored a combined five goals without reply and will hope to be as dominant on both ends on Monday.
