Germany vs Scotland Prediction & Betting Tips - Euro

by Ian John | in Euro Predictions

The 2024 European Championships begins with hosts Germany facing Scotland in the opening game of the tournament. The host nation will be keen to get off to a positive start in Group A after a mixed series of results recently.

Manager Julian Nagelsmann has won four of his eight games in charge of Germany thus far, including three of the last four. He made some big calls when naming his squad for the tournament omitting several stars, such as Mats Hummels, Timo Werner, Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke will be under no illusions as to the task facing his team in this game in what should be a lively opener to begin Euro 2024.

Germany - Scotland: Form Analysis

Germany comes into this game unbeaten in their last four games, winning three matches.

In March, superb wins away to France (2-0) and then at home to the Netherlands (2-1) were followed by two less-convincing displays in June. A 0-0 draw with Ukraine and, most recently, a 2-1 home win over Greece.

No team has a better European Championships record than Germany. They have won the tournament three times, been runner-up three times, and been the third-placed team on a trio of occasions. They have qualified for every Euro Finals since their first appearance in 1972, 14 in total and the most of any national team in Europe. However, they have not won the tournament since 1996. At Euro 2020, they went out in the Round of 16, losing 2-0 to England at Wembley.

Germany comes into this game unbeaten in their last four games.

Scotland was one of the first qualifiers for the Euro 2024 Finals after making a lightning start in Group A.

The Scots won their first five qualifying games, including a memorable win over Spain. Two draws and a defeat saw them finish second to the Spanish in Group A, earning a direct route into the finals.

Since then, their form has been poor. With just one win in their last nine games, a 2-0 home win over Gibraltar in June. Their most recent match saw them draw 2-2 with Finland at Hampden Park, just seven days before their Euro 2024 opening fixture.

With games to come against Hungary and Switzerland, the Scots will feel if they can earn something from this game, it would be a massive boost to their hopes of reaching the Euros Round of 16 for the first time.

Germany & Scotland Squad Analysis

With this game being the opening match of the tournament, neither Germany nor Scotland should have any injury worries or disciplinary concerns. Much of the speculation in the lead-up to the match has been on who will start for both countries.

For Germany, the main issues center on goalkeeper and midfield, with Manuel Neuer being preferred to Marc-Andre Ter Stegen between the sticks.

Reports also suggest out-of-form Barcelona midfielder and Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan will likely partner Toni Kroos in central midfield, despite poor form for club and country of late. Arsenal star Kai Havertz will likely play a withdrawn number 9 role for Germany.

Neither Germany nor Scotland should have any injury worries or disciplinary concerns.

Despite a slight injury concern over a couple of players, Scotland boss Steve Clarke will have a full-strength squad to pick from for the game.

Kieran Tierney could start in a central defensive role, allowing captain Andy Robertson to play in his natural left-back position. Che Adams will likely be given a lone striking role in the opener for the Scots.

Germany - Scotland Key Points

  1. Germany are unbeaten in their last four matches, winning three of those games.
  2. Scotland has won just one of their last nine games and none of their last four away games.
  3. Germany has won all of its last three matches against Scotland, leading at half time in two of those games.
  4. Germany has scored inside eleven minutes in three of their last six games.
  5. Scotland has won just one of the last nine against teams ranked 20th or better in the FIFA rankings.

Our Germany vs Scotland Prediction

The host nation benefits from a partisan home crowd in Munich, home advantage and a Scotland team in a poor run of form. Having gone unbeaten in their last four, winning three, and long overdue an impressive performance at a major finals, the data strongly suggests Germany will be good for the win here. Add to that Germany scoring several early goals in recent games, the HT/FT option looks one of the better value bets available for this Euro 2024 opener. Our Germany v Scotland prediction: Half Time : Germany / Full Time : Germany.

Germany vs Scotland - Other Interesting Predictions

Germany to win and both teams to score

Our secondary prediction for the Germany vs Scotland Euro 2024 opener continues on from our first. There, we predicted Germany to lead at half-time and full-time. So, having already reviewed the data, which shows a German win is very likely, we have paired that with both teams to score for the second prediction. Scotland tend to score goals, even in games that they lose or draw, so while the data suggests the Scots may grab a goal, Germany should win this game comfortably. Our second prediction, therefore, is for Germany to win and both teams to score.
