Freiburg vs West Ham Prediction & Betting Tips - Europa League
by Joseph King | in Europa League Predictions
Group A in the UEFA Europa League sees second-place Freiburg taking on leaders West Ham for the second matchday of the group stage. Both teams kicked their campaigns off with a win, giving them a three point lead over Olympiacos and TSC who round out the group. The winner of this match would put themselves in pole position to top the standings. Finishing first carries extra importance in the Europa League as the group winners skip a round and head directly the final 16. The runners-up, meanwhile, have to play an extra round against the Champions League groups third-place finishers.

Freiburg - West Ham: Form Analysis
Freiburg have experienced a mixed start to the season with three wins, one draw and two defeats in six Bundesliga fixtures. This has them sitting eighth in the standings, off the pace of their fantastic fifth-place finish from last season. The Breisgau-Brasilianer are coming off a 2-0 win over Augsburg in their last fixture, pushing their unbeaten run to three games. They’ve shown some defensive vulnerability this season, conceding five goals away to Stuttgart and four goals at home to Dortmund. However, the response has been strong with Freiburg now keeping back-to-back clean sheets. Freiburg took all three points against Olympiacos in a wild group stage opener. The German side got the eventual winner in the 86th minute to secure a 3-2 away win.
West Ham looked very dangerous in their last outing against Sheffield United in the Premier League, registering five clear cut scoring chances. They would finish the match with a 2-0 victory, marking the Hammers third win in their last four fixtures. It’s been a solid start to the season for David Moyes’ men following their disappointing 14th-place finish last year. West Ham, who were crowned champions of the Conference League last season, are up to seventh in the league standings. West Ham won their first Europa League group stage match with a comfortable 3-0 win at home. The visitors have lost only once on their travels this season while managing three wins and a draw in five road trips.

Freiburg & West Ham Squad Analysis
Freiburg manager Christian Streich will have a few injury problems to deal with ahead of this Thursday Europa League fixture. They’ll have as many as five players miss out here following the most recent injury to Yannik Kietel on the weekend. The 23-year-old midfielder was forced off after 20 minutes in Freiburg’s last appearance and he’ll join the likes of Gunter, Rosenfelder, Kyereh and Uphoff on the treatment table. The danger man for the hosts is the 30-year-old attacking midfielder Vincenzo Grifo who should take up his spot on the left wing. Grifo has already registered a goal and three assists this season.
West Ham have an almost perfectly healthy squad for the trip to Germany with only Aaron Cresswell being a doubt with a hamstring injury. It remains to be seen what David Moyes will do in regards to his team selection. He opted to make wholesale changes for West Ham’s first group stage match against Serbian side TSC. However, given that a win here would put the London side in a very strong position, Moyes may opt to field a close to full-strength team. We should see James Ward Prowse and Lucas Paqueta in the midfield with Benrhama and new signing Kudus on the wings. Expect Lukasz Fabianski to take his place in goal for this one.

Our Freiburg vs West Ham Prediction
This is a big match which could very well decide which team wins the group. West Ham have looked good this season and have made some impressive additions to their squad with the likes of Alvarez and Kudus. They’ve been in very strong attacking form and should be able to breach this vulnerable Freiburg defense for at least a goal. Meanwhile, Freiburg have bounced back with two wins from their last three. They’ll be confident of getting a result on home soil and we expect them to find the net as well. Our Freiburg vs West Ham prediction is for both teams to score + over 2.5 goals.
