Freiburg will continue their push for European qualification as they come up against a struggling Union Berlin. This matchday 17 of the Bundesliga season will be played at the Europa-Park Stadion on Saturday. The winter break was taken with the hosts 8th in the standings with 24 points while the visitors are 15th with 13 points. Freiburg are three points behind top-five teams ahead of this round and need to continue their momentum for an outside chance. They lost 3-2 to Heidenheim in their last match, but it came on the back of three straight wins. Even at home, they have won three and drawn two of their last five league games giving them an edge.

Union Berlin start this round just above the relegation zone and only three points adrift of the bottom-side Darmstadt. The visitors won 2-0 against Koln in their last match which made it seven points from four games, before the break. That run was much-needed, as Union lost nine games in a row in the league before that sequence. Concerns still remain over their away form though, as the Berliners have been one of the worst traveling sides of the division. They lost their last six away league games, four of those without scoring. In fact, only two teams have scored fewer goals than Union, which throws a question mark over their chances.
