Freiburg will host RB Leipzig on Tuesday in tone of the German Cup semifinals in a repeat of last year’s final which Leipzig won on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The winner here will battle with Stuttgart or Eintracht Frankfurt in the final in June. These two teams will once again go head to head this coming weekend in the league where they are right in the race for a Champions League spot for next season. Freiburg have the advantage in that race as they sit fourth and two points above Leipzig with four matches left to play. So they will hope to deal a psychological blow with a win on Tuesday. Christian Streich’s men come to this match in strong form as they have won their last three matches with the latest being a 1-0 win away to Cologne over the weekend. Two of those wins have come on the road but they have struggled at home where they have only managed one win in their last four matches, a 4-0 thumping of lowly Schalke. Freiburg have been at this stage of the competition only twice before in their history and last year was the first time they managed to advance. After beating Bayern Munich in the previous round, Freiburg will feel confident of securing another important win here.

RB Leipzig will hope the aura of defending German Cup as well as their recent success in this fixture enables them advance to a fourth final in five years. Marco Rose’s men have made it to the final of the last two editions and last year were able to win their maiden title. They also arrive for this match in good form, having beaten Hoffenheim 1-0 at home over the weekend to register their fourth win in the last five matches. They have struggled on the road though, losing four of their last five matches. Leipzig beat Freiburg 3-1 earlier in the season in the league to extend their unbeaten run against them to seven matches and coupling this with the fact that they have lost only once in 16 German Cup matches, including winning 10 straight, Leipzing will be ever confident of advancing here. Just like Freiburg, Leipzig were also giant slayers in the previous round as they eliminated Borussia Dortmund, the team they last lost to in the competition which was in the final in 2020/21.
