France U23 are n a really tricky situation as far as going for the quarter finals ticket at the Olympic Games is concerned. They are set to take on hosts Japan U23 in a game they must win. Heading to this game, Japan have all but secured their place in the quarters after their win over Mexico while France gave themselves some hope with a win over South Africa. France are currently third in Group A on three points and Japan lead with six. Ahead of this game, France rallied from behind three times to secure a 4-3 win over South Africa and for them to progress, this is a game they must win. Andre Pierre Gignac scored three goals in the game and being the competition’s top scorer. He’s had a hand in each of the team’s five goals so far and will be expected to play a key role here again. Defensively, Les Bleus will need a lot of improvement; they were really shambolic against South Africa and have conceded seven goals in two matches.

Takefusa Kubo was once again the star as Japan saw off 10-man Mexico for their second win at the Olympics. He got the opening goal and will hope to inspire the team again as they target at least a draw to secure a top finish in the group. They haven’t scored as many goals as France at the tournament but they’ve had the needed compactness and did just enough to win their matches. Ritsu Doan provided an assist and scored the crucial second goal to give Japan a two-goal cushion though Mexico pulled one back late on. Doan and Kubo will be key for the team in the final group game and probably the latter matches of the competition. They haven’t seemed uncomfortable in their two matches and should go to the last group game very confident.
