Host France will look to ride on the huge support to waltz past an erratic Brazil as the teams eye a berth in the semi-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. This match in Nantes on Saturday will see the winner go on to take the winner of the other quarter-final between Spain and Colombia later in the tournament's last four.
France topped Group A with six points, winning two of their three matches. They won 3-2 against Colombia and 2-1 against New Zealand, although they lost 2-1 against Canada. Aided by the point penalty imposed against Canada, the French women were catapulted to the top of the points tally.
Facing Brazil won’t be a nightmare, as they have won their last three matches against them, although they were all played before July 2023. Brazil qualified as the second-best third-placed team in the tournament after finishing third in Group C. They had just three points to their name from a 1-0 win over Nigeria on matchday one.
Brazil followed that up with a 2-1 loss to Japan and a 2-0 loss to Spain, but had a one-goal advantage in the goal difference against Australia in the mini-group of third-placed teams. Their task to overcome the French has become even more difficult, with their all-time leading goalscorer, Marta, suspended for this tie after being sent off in their last match against Spain.
