Canada, runners-up at the last World Cup were surprisingly held to a goalless draw by Nigeria., The Canadians beat Ireland 2-1 in their second game but it was Nigeria who caused a big upset by defeating Australia 3-2. Australia ended up topping the group by beating Canada 4-0 in their final match. Nigeria came second despite only drawing 0-0 with Ireland.

Japan topped the group after winning all three of their group games, all to nil. An impressive 10 goals were scored by the Japanese side. They clinched top spot with a 3-0 win over Spain. The Spanish side had won their first two matches but were no match for the Japanese. Zambia filled third spot after defeating Costa Rica 3-1 in their final group game after losing both of their first two matches 5-0.

European champions England won all three of their matches to win Group D. They weren't too impressive when beating Haiti 1-0 and then defeated Denmark by the same scoreline. The goals certainly flowed in their final group game as they beat China 6-1. Denmark finished second after gettng wins over China and Haiti. The Chinese side finished third and failed to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time. Haiti finished bottom, losing all three ganes. They didn't score a goal but weren't humiliated in their first finals. It's England and Denmark who progress as we predicted before the group began.

The United States and the Netherlands were our tips to qualify for the knockout stages. That's just what happened but surprisingly it was the Netherlands who topped the group. They had a narrow 1-0 win over Portugal and then drew 1-1 with defending world champions, the USA. Their final group game saw them hammer Vietnam 7-0. The USA were only able to draw with Portugal and that left them in second place in the group with only one win from their three games.

The French and Brazilian teams were expected to be the frontrunners in Group F but then came Jamaica. They caused a big surprise by finishing second in the group and qualifying for the last 16. They held both France and Brazil to goaless draws, winning their other game 1-0 against Panama. France finished top of the group after beating both Brazil and Panama. There were some nervous moments in their final game against Panama. They trailed 1-0 but a Diani hat-trick saw them through. For Brazil, it's an early exit from the tournament.and the first time since 1995 they've failed to get out of their group.
