A-League
A-League 2024-25 Presentation and Predictions
Established in 2004, the A-League is Australia’s premier football competition and has quickly grown to become one of the most exciting leagues in the Asia-Pacific region. As of the 2024-25 season, the league now comprises 13 teams (11 from Australia and 2 from New Zealand) and operates on a standard round-robin format, though the key difference is that there is no promotion or relegation as there is in most European football leagues.
The A-League season typically spans from October to May, featuring a 27-round regular season. This is followed by a Final Series in which the top six teams compete, leading to a Grand Final. The team that finishes first in the regular season is called the ‘Premier’, while the victor of the Grand Final is crowned the season’s Champion.
Check out our tips and predictions for this season below.
Outright prediction: Who will win the 2024-25 A-League title?
Unlike some of the other professional football leagues around the world where one or a handful of teams tend to dominate the title race year in and year out, the A-League has seen eight different sides lift the trophy since its inception.
Last season, the Central Coast Mariners were crowned both Premiers and Champions, with the latter being their third title in the top flight. Sydney FC are the most successful club in the history of the league, finishing as Premiers on four occasions and Champions five times.
However, this season, we are witnessing something special, as the newest team in the division - Auckland FC - is leading the league standings after 15 games from Adelaide United, who have only ever been crowned champions once in the past (2016). Auckland’s success to date has stemmed from their impeccable defence which has only conceded 12 goals this term - the fewest of any team in the league.
Our prediction to win the 2024-25 A-League: Auckland FC!
A-League 2024-25 winner: every team’s odds to win the title
Despite being the new boys on the block, Auckland FC have already shown that they are well capable of going toe-to-toe with even the best teams in the division and are currently showing up as the bookmakers’ favourite to create history by winning the A-League at their first attempt. However, there is still a long way to go until the champion is crowned and plenty can happen by then with more experienced teams still firmly in the race for the title.

Top Goal-scorer prediction in the 2024-25 A-League
Jamie Maclaren dominated the goal-scoring charts for many years, winning the Golden Boot in five of six seasons between 2016-17 and 2022-23 for Melbourne Victory, en route to becoming the all-time top scorer in the history of the A-League. However, he departed to join the Indian Super League club Mohun Bagan at the start of the 2023-24 campaign which allowed Adam Taggart to win the coveted award last season with 20 goals in 25 matches.
This term, Sydney FC veteran Joe Lolley leads the standings with nine goals in 14 games, two clear of five players tied on seven goals apiece, including Noah Botic, Valere Germain, Hiroshi Ibusuki, Kosta Barbarouses and Archie Goodwin. Notable, despite sitting atop the league table, no Auckland FC player features in the top 10 in the race for the Golden Boot, with Neyder Moreno currently 14th in the leading goal-scorer standings.
Our 2024-25 Scottish Premiership top goalscorer prediction: Sydney’s Joe Lolley or Archie Goodwin of Adelaide United.

A-League Top 6 Prediction: which teams will qualify for the final series?
At the end of the regular season, the top six teams in the league standings advance to the Finals Series. Teams are ranked based on the total points earned throughout the regular season and if two or more teams are tied on points, a pre-determined set of tiebreakers will be implemented to decide the winner.
The Finals Series lasts for four weeks. In the first week, the teams ranked third to sixth face off in single-elimination matches, with the winner of these games moving on to join the first and second-ranked teams in two-legged ties which will take place over the following two weeks. The victors of these ties advance to the Grand Final.
Notably, A-League clubs are eligible to qualify for both the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two tournaments. However, Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix are excluded from the AFC competitions, as they are based in New Zealand, which is part of the Oceania Football Confederation. As mentioned, teams in the A-League cannot be relegated from the division.

Beginners Guide to how the A-League works
The A-League has undergone significant expansion since its establishment in 2004 when only eight teams were included in the competition. Of the initial eight teams, only the New Zealand Knights have failed to survive to the current season, folding after the 2006-07 campaign.
The expansion of the A-League is an ongoing process and it has now grown to include clubs from both Australia and New Zealand. In the current 2024-25 season, 13 teams are competing in the league, following the granting of an expansion license to Auckland. Auckland FC was officially launched on 14 March 2024.
The regular A-League season consists of a 24-match home and away schedule for each club, with two byes, plus two additional rounds (including the Unite Rounds), totalling 26 matches. At the end of the regular season, the top six teams in the league standings advance to the Finals Series.
Two trophies are up for grabs in the A-League: the Premier’s Place and the A-League Trophy. The Premier’s Plate is given to the team that finishes first in the regular season, while the A-League Trophy is awarded to the A-League Champions - the team that wins the Grand Final in the Finals Series.
Here is a quick overview of the format:
- Each team will play 24 home and away games, plus two additional matches.
- The team that finished at the top of the league table is crowned A-League Premiers
- The top six teams in the standings advance to the Finals Series
- The winner of the Grand Finals is crowned A-League Champions
- There is no promotion or relegation
The top two teams in the standings (Australian teams only) qualify for the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two competitions. Teams from New Zealand are excluded from these competitions as they fall under the Oceania Football Confederation.
Tips for making accurate A-League predictions
Given the competitive and ever-expanding nature of the A-League, placing consistent successful bets can become challenging. Here are a few factors to consider in your A-League betting decisions.
- Do not disregard the underdog
- Pay attention to the fixture schedule
- Favour teams playing at home
- Stay updated with player availability
- Make use of reliable statistics
- Do not disregard the underdog
As we mentioned earlier in this article, the A-League is one of the most competitive around, with eight teams winning the title in the last 20 years. Additionally, newcomers like Auckland FC have made a splash since joining the league and have been very profitable for their backers, having already caused several upsets en route to the lead in the league standings.
Thus, a team’s position in the league table may not accurately reflect how they will perform in a given match, especially when considering that this season, the top eight sides in the standings are separated by just 12 points after 15 games.
Pay attention to the fixture schedule
As is the case in most leagues across the globe, fixture schedules can have a significant impact on a team’s performance. For example, Central Coast Mariners FC and Sydney FC are participating in the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two respectively.
Given the distance between Australia and most teams across the AFC region, A-League sides that are competing in AFC competitions have to travel long distances for matches, and often fatigue can play a huge factor in their performances, especially when games are scheduled in quick succession.
Favour teams playing at home
Similar to most other football leagues, teams playing at home have a significant advantage due to their familiarity with their home ground. Over the last five seasons, teams playing at home have accounted for 46% of wins in a season.
Notably, this season (2024-25) is a little different, with home sides winning 31% of games to date while teams on the road have won 45% of matches. However, over the recent history of the A-League, home teams have almost doubled the amount of wins as away sides.
Stay updated with player availability
Staying up to date with player availability is crucial for making informed betting decisions, as injuries, suspensions and last-minute changes in the lineup can have a significant impact on the team’s performance and the odds offered by bookmakers.
Monitoring official club announcements, injury reports, and news from reliable sources helps bettors assess the potential effect on a match’s outcome. It’s also important to track players’ recent form and any tactical shifts in the team, as these factors can influence the chances of key players being involved or underperforming.
Make use of reliable statistics
Utilising reliable statistics is essential for successful betting, as it provides a data-driven foundation for predicting outcomes. Key stats like a team’s win-loss records, goals scored, possession percentages and head-to-head results can offer valuable insights into a team’s form and performance trends.
Diving deeper into player stats, including goal involvements and defensive records can also help gauge potential individual contributions and weaknesses (player prop bets). Relying on trustworthy, up-to-date stats - like those you will find at SportyTrader - ensures a more calculated approach, reducing the reliance on guesswork and blind luck.
What not to do for your A-League predictions
While using the tips above to help your betting decisions are important, it is equally imperative to avoid certain pitfalls that can lead to losses. Here’s a list of things to avoid when making your A-League predictions:
- Relying on gut feeling or luck
- Ignoring team news
- Overlooking head-to-head records
- Chasing losses
- Disregarding home and away form
- Being swayed by public opinion
- Betting without bankroll management
These mistakes may seem basic, but they are often the primary reasons many punters struggle to place consistent winning bets. Make sure you’re not falling into these traps by steering clear of them at all costs.
A-League predictions: Statistics you need to know
