Fluminense’s defence of the Copa Libertadores is in danger of falling through at the Round of 16 stage. The champions trail 2-1 ahead of hosting Gremio in the return leg. Read on for our preview and prediction of this match.

Fluminense weren’t very smart in Porto Alegre, as they lost their lead and the game. They conceded quick goals within three minutes and not even Gremio having a player sent off worked in Fluminense’s favor.

Vinicius Lima’s goal will, however, give them hope coming into the return leg. They must improve on their recent run of four matches without a win if they are to defend their title. In their most recent match, they drew 0-0 with Corinthians.

It doesn’t look so good on the hosts, having last beaten Gremio in 2019.

Gremio will be buzzing ahead of this game, looking to hit the Libertadores quarters for the first time since 2020. Their comeback win on Tuesday sent them undefeated in five matches in this competition.

Though coming from a 2-0 loss at home to Bahia, Gremio will be unfazed at the hostile fans expected here. They’ve not only won each of their last eight matches against Fluminense, the run also included three away wins.

In Libertadores action, they recovered from four straight losses to win four of their last five matches. Gremio are also on back-to-back away wins in the competition and kept clean sheets in both games.

The last time Gremio visited Fluminense for a Libertadores match was in 2013, and they won 3-0.
