Flamengo did not have the best start to the Serie A this season and going to Match Day 4, they will be hoping for better tidings when they host Gremio. Ahead of this clash, two points separate the two sides; Flamengo are 12th with three points and Gremio sixth on five points. Flamengo’s title defence started on a wrong footing with two straight defeats – at home to Atletico Mineiro and away to Atletico Goianiense but they recovered to beat Coritiba 1-0 away from home in their last match. They will be looking to improve on the win over Coritiba, who had to play a better part of the second half with a man down though at that point they were leading through Daniel Arrascaeta’s 28th minute goal. The loss to Mineiro in their first home match this season, came as a surprise, as Flamengo do not lose many of their home games. They were unbeaten in their 19 home matches in Serie A last season, winning 17 and drawing two. The loss to Mineiro meant they have failed to keep a clean sheet at home in six straight Serie A matches while five of the last six have ended in over 2.5 goals. In the last 27 home matches in Serie A, Flamengo have failed to score in just two. Flamengo have a good record over Gremio; in their last six meetings, they have won five and drawn once.

In the last 10 meetings between Gremio and Flamengo, Gremio have managed just three wins but with their start this season, they will head to this clash as the form team. However, they won’t have very fond memories of this game, having lost 5-0 to Flamengo in the Copa Libertadores semis last season then falling 1-0 in the league fixture as the hosts sailed to the title. Gremio started the season with a 1-0 win over Fluminense but have followed that with two straight draws; 1-1 with Ceara abd 0-0 with Corinthians. Diego Souza should have been the hero against Corinthians but he missed a penalty in the 78th minute and with it the team dropped two points. Gremio finished fourth last season, 25 points below Flamengo, having fallen home and away as well as the heavy loss in the Libertadores, and going here they will want to hold on their unbeaten start. The downside is that Gremio are not the best to bet on when playing away from home. Last season, in 19 away league matches, they managed just seven wins. They head to this clash winless in their last three away league matches and have only two clean sheets in their last 11 away league matches but they have scored in 10 of the 11.
