Brazilian champions Flamengo have a tight schedule and while other teams will be playing their third round games, the Scarlet-Black will be playing their second of the Serie A. They host newly promoted America Mineiro on Monday. Ahead of this game, Flamengo have three points from their opening win over Palmeiras while America Mineiro are still searching for their first point in the league. The win over South American champions Palmeiras was a statement of intent from Roger Ceni’s side and after beating Internacional to the title in a tight fight last season, they will be hoping to go all the way this season again. They’ve won the title in the last two seasons and remain favorites in this too. Going into this game, they are unbeaten in their last 13 matches and are coming from a Brazilian Cup win over Coritiba, which handed them a third win in four matches. They haven’t conceded in their last three matches but failed to score in one.

America Mineiro’s return to the top flight hasn’t come with a lot of good fortunes so far. In their four matches since the season commenced, they have no win, and their two losses in the league leave them joint bottom with another newly promoted team, Chapecoense. It will not get any easier for them here and the reality of playing in the top flight must be sinking in now. In their last game, they managed to get their opening goal of the season, drawing 2-2 with Serie C side Criciuma in the Brazilian Cup, but that too, ended in disappointment as they lost on post match penalties. The main concern they will have going into this game is a weak frontline, having failed to score in three of the four matches played so far. Actually, one of their two goals against Criciuma was an own goal scored by Rodrigo Fagundes. They opened their league campaign with a 1-0 loss to Athletico Paranaense before falling by the same margin to Corinthians and their away run isn’t strong too, having failed to win in their last three trips.
