Second-place Flamengo will look to close the gap on league leaders Botafogo when they host rock-bottom America MG for matchday 16 of the Brasileirão. Flamengo come into this fixture off the back of a hard-fought derby encounter with Fluminense that ended 0-0 away from home. They now return to the Maracana with a golden opportunity to make up some ground in their hunt for a first Serie A title since 2020. The Rubro-Negro have accumulated 27 points after 15 games in the league but still trail Botafogo by a daunting 12 points. With just over half the season remaining, Flamengo will have to capitalize on these types of situations if they are to lift their eighth league title. The draw against their rivals in the previous fixture means that Flamengo are now on an eight match unbeaten run. During that stretch, they’ve managed to score a total of 14 goals while conceding just four.
America Mineiro bounced back in a big way on Tuesday, blasting five goals past Chilean side Colo-Colo in a 5-1 Copa Sudamericana win. The victory put an end to a previous three game losing streak which saw America allow a total of eight goals. It also saw Coehlo advance to the round 16 in South America’s equivalent of the Europa League. In the Brasileirão, America are sitting at the bottom of the table with a total of only nine points from 14 league fixtures played. They have only two league wins and are still searching for their first away victory. This is certainly not the spot where they will be expecting to claim that elusive first away win, however.
