Dutch Eredivisie table toppers Feyenoord will attempt to extend their lead at the top of the standings this weekend when they host struggling Groningen in round 24. Feyenoord have amassed 52 points and have a three-point lead on second place while Groningen sit second from bottom with 17 points. With a crucial potential top-of-the-table clash with Ajax coming up in the next two matchdays, Arne Slot’s men cannot afford to drop points here and against Volendam in round 25. They arrive this weekend on a 16-match unbeaten run in all competitions and have won five straight. Despite their successes, this season, a growing concern for the Rotterdam club has been at the back where they have been unable to keep their opponents at bay and have conceded at least one goal in six of their last seven matches with the exception being the 1-0 win over Heerenveen in the Dutch Cup last time out. Their rampant attack has bailed them out on several occasions, most recently in the 4-4 draw with NEC Nijmegen in the Cup and the 2-2 draw with PSV in the league. In both matches, Feyenoord were forced to come back from 2-0 down. In fact, Feyenoord have trailed at halftime in three of their last six matches and this could be an enticing market to look into for this match with Groningen.

Groningen ended a run of 13 straight matches without a win last weekend when they beat fellow strugglers Excelsior 3-0 to give their survival hopes a big shot in the arm. After drawing 1-1 with Emmen a week prior, Dennis van de Ree’s men are now unbeaten in two matches which is happening for only the second time in the league this season. They have however not gone three matches without defeat this season nor have they won back-to-back matches and they will be keen to achieve this which will, in turn, send them out of the drop zone. That is if other results also go in their favour. Having conceded just one goal in their last two matches, Groningen will know that defensive solidity will be key towards coming away with a positive result against Feyenoord.
