The end of the 2023 MLS season is only a few games away as ninth-place FC Dallas hosts eighth-placed San Jose Earthquakes. As things currently stand, these two teams would have to play a Wild Card play-in game to decide the final Western Conference playoff team. However, there are still a few games remaining for positions to potentially change. Both teams could desperately use a win to give themselves some breathing room. FC Dallas currently hold a three point lead over tenth-place Austin and trail their opponents today by just a single point. Additionally, Dallas have a game-in-hand advantage, meaning they could potentially move as high as seventh-place if they are able to cash it in for three points. Dallas comes into this matchup on an unbeaten streak of six matches. However, they’ve failed to convert draws into wins during that time with five of those six ending in stalemates. The Toros most recent appearance ended in a 0-0 draw, which was preceded by two straight 1-1 draws.

San Jose will be targeting seventh-place Portland as they can overtake them with a win and a Montreal draw or win. That would put the Quakes into the automatic qualification spots for the playoffs, meaning they wouldn’t have to play in the new Wild Card play-in. San Jose are in a similar spot to Dallas as they have been picked up a lot of draws over recent weeks instead of wins. The visitors are coming off a 1-1 away draw with Minnesota in their last match, marking their second straight result with that scoreline. In their last six league fixtures, the Quakes have accumulated seven points by way of one win, four draws and one loss. The majority of their points this season have come on home soil as San Jose have really struggled for consistency on the road.
