This weekend's Bundesliga action sees leaders Bayern Munich taking on Augsburg, a team in the doldrums of 13th place. After an exciting opening few months that involved several teams contending for the title, Bayern are threatening to pull away from the chasing pack. Sure, they only have a three-point lead over nearest rivals RB Leipzig but it's going to take something special to stop them from claiming yet another title with the way their playing. Robert Lewandowski has a good season every season but this season is even better than those other seasons. He's scoring at a rate not seen in Germany since Gerd Muller, banging in 40 goals in 32 games for Bayern so far in this campaign. Injury has ruled him out for a few short weeks but he has a number of adequate deputies as could be seen in the 6-0 win at Hoffenheim on Saturday. That performance was overshadowed by a farcical protest.

Augsburg need a protest of their own against the tyranny of bad results before they ground down into relegation paste. Four defeats from their last six matches has left them hovering above the drop zone, and we have little doubt that thoughtful Bayern will see the gap and offer to accompany them some of the way. Bayern have scored 16 goals in their last five home games, condemning better teams than Augsburg to heavy defeats. Augsburg have lost seven of their 12 away games in the Bundesliga.
