Barcelona will face Lyon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao on Saturday afternoon. Both teams celebrated victories last week, with Lyon defeating Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in the French league playoff final, while Barcelona overcame Real Sociedad 8-0 to secure the Copa de la Reina.
Barcelona have now reached their fourth consecutive final and fifth in six seasons. The defending champions have claimed victory twice, defeating Chelsea 4-0 in Gothenburg in 2021 and coming back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to edge Wolfsburg 3-2 in Eindhoven last year. Blaugrana breezed through their group stage matches and are now the only team to top their section in all three seasons under the current format of this competition. They then defeated Brann and showcased their resilience by overcoming a 1-0 home loss to Chelsea in the semi-finals with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge. Barcelona are on a seven-match winning streak across all competitions, during which they've scored an impressive 37 goals, and they enter the final as the clear favorites, according to the bookmakers.
Lyon have also reached the final without losing a single match, drawing twice in the group stage while securing victories against both Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain home and away in the knockout phase. Most impressively, they overturned a 2-0 deficit with ten minutes remaining at home against their French rivals PSG in the semi-finals, winning 3-2 in a comeback even swifter than Barcelona's in last year's final. Two of Lyon's last three titles have come against Barcelona, with the French side triumphing 4-1 in the Budapest final five years ago and 3-1 as underdogs in the 2022 final in Turin. They also took down Barca home and away in the 2017-18 quarters, which was the last time the Catalan outfit failed to reach at least the semis. The Gones have won 12 of their last 13 games across all competitions, with their only defeat in that period coming against Bordeaux in the Feminine Division 1 at the start of the month.
