Exeter City vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction & Betting Tips - FA Cup
by James | in FA Cup Predictions
A cross-divisional match occurs in the FA Cup this weekend when Exeter City hosts Sheffield Wednesday in the third round. Exeter are tenth in League Two with play-off ambitions remaining alive. Meanwhile, Wednesday are fighting for their Championship survival; the Owls are 21st in the table, a superior goal difference keeping them ahead of Derby. Despite their league position, Wednesday have been in good form of late. A victory over Derby on New Year's Day was their third in a four-game unbeaten streak. Four of Wednesday's previous five matches have featured fewer than three goals. Wednesday, who won the last of their three FA Cups in 1935, failed to win ten of their previous 11 away games in all competitions. However, in the FA Cup, Wednesday have travelled well in recent outings, winning three of their past four away fixtures. This trip will be different from the last because the Wednesday squad has been affected by a Covid outbreak. It is expected that they will be missing several first-team players as well as members of the coaching staff. This crisis may force them to field a starting line-up of inexperienced youngsters.
Whether Exeter can make the most of this crisis is another matter. They have been in poor form ahead of this tie, failing to win four of their last five games. They did at least score in each one of those games, extending that run of scoring to nine consecutive matches. When Exeter win, they tend to win big. They have scored three or more goals in their last five victories. At home, Exeter only won one of their previous four games. The furthest that Exeter have ever gone in the FA Cup is the quarter-final stage, in 1931 and 1981. Could 2021 be added to that list of good cup runs occurring in a year ending with the number one? We think it could. Three FA Cup games unbeaten at home, Exeter look a decent draw no bet selection.
