Excelsior hosts NAC Breda on Sunday for the second leg of the Eredivisie promotion playoff. Eredivisie side Excelsior will have to overturn a massive aggregate scoreline if they are to remain in the Dutch top flight for next season. They capitulated in the first leg to give up six goals in a heavy 6-2 away loss to the second division side. Excelsior, who finished the 2023/24 campaign in 16th-place in the Eredivisie, have experienced wildly different results their last two times taking to the pitch. They would close out the league season with a 7-1 home victory over ADO, making it three wins from the final four matches on the fixture list. They would then suffer two red cards in their match against Breda, leading to their current predicament. It’s been tough going for the Rotterdam based club on their travels this season as they have a 2-4-11 away record while conceding 46 goals.

NAC Breda couldn’t have dreamt up a better first leg result. They are now just 90 minutes away from a return to the Eredivisie after five seasons in the second division. The Yellow Army finished the Eerste Divisie in eighth-place, making them the last team to grab one of the playoff qualification spots. They  defeated Roda by an enormous 8-1 aggregate scoreline in the first playoff round and were able to dispose of Emmen 4-1 on aggregate to advance to this stage. NAC Breda have been one of the hottest teams in the Dutch second light to end the year as they enter this second leg riding a nine match unbeaten run. Additionally, four of their last five appearances have resulted in victories, many of which have been quite convincing. However, Excelsior have shown they can run up a huge scoreline at this ground so the second-division challenging side will have to remain on their toes.
