Everton will go into their final home game of the season against Sheffield United looking to end a tumultuous campaign on a high. Heading into this game, Sheffield United are already relegated while Everton’s survival is assured. For the first time in three seasons, Everton went into the final three rounds assured of survival. It is even sweeter considering this season the Toffees were docked eight points. Their 1-1 draw with Luton Town last time out sent Everton on a four-game unbeaten run. The only negative is that Elijah Adebayo’s equalizer denied them a fourth straight win. It won’t hurt anyway with Everton hitting an unassailable 37 points in the context of the survival race. This match pits two of the lowest scoring sides in the league this season. Everton have so far managed just 38 goals but they’ve made up for it with good defending. Much of that is attributable to their skipper, Jordan Pickford. Only the three sides in the top three have conceded fewer than Everton (49) so far. Sean Dyche’s side has four clean sheets in the last six matches, and only lost once in seven matches. They also failed to score in just two of their last 11 games, while at home, Everton are on four straight wins with clean sheets.

Signs that Sheffield United would struggle in the season were visible from very early in the season. In their opening 10 league games, they had just a point from a possible 30. Their return to the Championship is already confirmed and for them this is just a formality. Sheffield have been the poorest in the league this season, winning the least matches, losing the most games. They have also scored the least goals (35), and conceded the most (100). With an average of 2.7 goals conceded per game, the Blades come into this encounter as clear underdogs. Their recent form says it all, having last won a game in February. They did show some signs of revival between March and April, picking three points from four matches. However, they coiled back to their nests afterwards, losing each of the last five matches coming here. They now have no win in 12 matches, and nine of those were defeats, the most recent a 3-1 home loss to Nottingham Forest.
