The second round of the English Football League Cup sees Premier League giants Everton hosting League Two minnows Salford City at Goodison Park on Wednesday night. Everton fans were disappointed with their club's 12th-place finish last season but the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti midway through the campaign gave cause for optimism. The Everton board have built on their acquisition of a top manager with the further additions of top-class signings like James Rodriguez from Real Madrid and Allan from Napoli. Everton will first have to contend with Spurs in their Premier League opener three days before this cup clash. Salford City have risen quickly through the lower leagues of English football in recent seasons, earning four promotions in five years before making it to the football league pyramid in 2019. A first season in League Two proved challenging for them but an 11th-placed finish is an impressive feat. Their success has been assisted by the ownership of Manchester United's famous Class of 92, a famous group of former players who created a dynasty at Old Trafford. Salford will also begin their league campaign over the weekend with a home fixture against Exeter City. They made it to this point after beating Rotherham United on penalties in the first round.

This will be the first meeting between Everton and Salford City. The Toffees will probably play a weakened side and still expect to win comfortably.
