England vs Switzerland Prediction & Betting Tips - Euro
by Ian John | in Euro Predictions
Will England fans be in for another night of drama when Gareth Southgate's team take on Switzerland in their Euro 2024 quarter-final on Saturday? It certainly appears likely, given England's stuttering progress in the tournament so far. Let's break down the match statistics and predictions for this matchup between the Three Lions and the Red Crosses.
A narrow 1-0 win over Serbia in their opening group game was followed by draws with Denmark (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0). That was enough to top Group C and earn them a fixture against Slovakia in the Round of 16. It took a Jude Bellingham wonder goal in the 5th minute of injury time, plus a Harry Kane header in the first minute of extra time, to earn a fortunate 2-1 victory.
In contrast, Switzerland have been excellent in the tournament so far. Manager Murat Yakin led his team to a fine 3-1 win over Hungary in their opener before they drew their next two games, 1-1 with Scotland and 1-1 with hosts Germany. That earned them a Round of 16 tie with Italy, whom they beat comfortably 2-0 to make the quarter-finals. Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas scoring the goals. A semi-final against either the Netherlands or Turkey awaits the winner in what should be another drama-filled evening of football for England and Swiss fans!

England - Switzerland: Form Analysis
England's form coming into this game is not ideal to say the least. They are unbeaten at Euro 2024, but have played poorly, except for the opening half-hour against Serbia. After topping Group C with a win over Serbia and two draws with Denmark and Slovenia, England trailed Slovakia in the Round of 16 for over an hour before Bellingham's late rescue act and Kane's extra-time winner.
While England's resilience has been impressive, their energy levels, form, tactics, and the manager's reluctance to change his team have frustrated fans and pundits alike. They all want to see much better from a very talented England team that has not gelled at all at the tournament, despite the progress made into the quarter-finals.
If historical records are anything to go by, they could see that improvement against the Swiss. England have lost three times to the Swiss in 28 games, the last defeat coming back in 1981.
England have won ten and drawn three of the last 13 games against the Swiss.
Murat Yakin, who played against England in the 2004 Euros, a game England won 3-0, will be well aware of that history as he gets his in-form Swiss team ready for what will be a second consecutive Euros quarterfinal.
Playing an adaptable 3-4-3 formation, the Swiss looked dangerous in attack and solid defensively. In fact, so far in the tournament, it was only the game against Scotland that saw them rattled and lose a little of the control and composure that has been a hallmark of their performances so far.
They almost topped Group A, only conceding an injury-time equaliser to Germany in their final group game, but they were superb in beating defending champions Italy 2-0 in the Round of 16 - a game they fully deserved to win by a greater margin.

England & Switzerland Squad Analysis
England manager Gareth Southgate has resisted making many changes to his team in the tournament so far, despite poor performances in almost all their games. The only position that has seen change is in midfield, where it appears Kobbie Mainoo will start alongside Declan Rice instead of Conor Gallagher or Trent Alexander-Arnold.
A change will have to be made in defence for the Three Lions.
Marc Guehi is suspended for the quarterfinal tie which means John Stones will have a new partner in the game. Ezri Konsa seems most likely to get the nod ahead of Lewis Dunk or Joe Gomez. However, Southgate could elect to play Kyle Walker at centre-back, allowing him to put Trent Alexander-Arnold at right full-back, his natural position. Although this is not viewed as a likely option for the England manager.
Kieran Trippier picked up a knock against Slovakia and was forced off, which could mean Luke Shaw gets a chance to play against Switzerland, or Bukayo Saka could fill in as he did against Slovakia.
Switzerland will see wing back Silvan Widmer return from a one-match ban, while Granit Xhaka's adductor issue won't see him miss the game. With Widmer returning, it could mean that either Fabien Rieder or Michel Aebischer will drop out.
Xhaka's news is a welcome boost for the Swiss with the ex-Arsenal man being one of the best players at the Euro 2024 tournament so far.

Our England vs Switzerland Prediction
Our prediction for the England vs Switzerland Euro 2024 quarterfinal is for a draw at the end of full time.
Historically, England have dominated this fixture, winning 10 (including one via penalties) of the past 13 fixtures between the two, drawing the other three. The Swiss have just three victories over England in their history, the first two coming in the 1940s.
However, recent form suggests that it is the Swiss that are in the better form, albeit they draw a lot of games (and have drawn two of their last three at Euro 2024). England qualified from their group with the same number of points as the Swiss (five) meaning they also drew two group games. They were also taken to extra time by Slovakia before coming through with a fortuitous 2-1 win.
So while the data historically suggests an England win, recent data predicts a far closer game. And with the number of draws both teams have experienced late, another draw at full-time is a solid pick for our first prediction here.
England vs Switzerland - Other Interesting Predictions
Harry Kane (England) to score at any time
Having netted against Denmark and then added the winning goal in extra time against Slovakia, Harry Kane is now up and running at Euro 2024 and with two goals, sits with a cluster of players on two goals in the tournament.
England's captain and talismanic striker will certainly start against the Swiss and given the creative options behind him, he looks a solid bet to be amongst the goals if England can find the net.
There is also the added bonus that Kane is also England's main penalty taker, which means that if the Three Lions can earn a penalty, then it will be their record-holding skipper who steps up to take the kick.
As such, Kane is our secondary prediction for this game to score at any time.
Granit Xhaka (Switzerland) to be shown a yellow card
Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka has arguably been the best player at Euro 2024 thus far. His prompting, workrate and passing have continued directly from his almost-perfect season with Bayer Leverkusen.
Yet the ex-Arsenal man is known for being a hot-headed player from the time he spent in the Premier League. That is something that England players will know.
Xhaka is already on one booking at Euro 2024 and in his time in the Premier League, has been booked 57 times and sent off on four occasions.
With the combative Declan Rice and fleet of foot Kobbie Mainoo likely to line up opposite him, the chance for a mistimed tackle looms large for the Swiss skipper and as such, backing him to be booked in the game is our third prediction for the game.
