Gameweek 25 in the Serie A will see Empoli play host to Fiorentina on Sunday afternoon. The hosts are currently in 16th place, while the visitors are eighth. Empoli got the 2023-24 season started in the worst possible way, losing each of their first five matches in a row and looking likely to battle the drop. Their disastrous start saw Paolo Zanetti dismissed as manager in mid-September, with Aurelio Andreazzoli appointed as his successor. However, with just three wins in 16 games, the club decided to part ways with the second manager in January this year. Davide Nicola stepped into the hot seat and has made an instant impact. The new boss is unbeaten in his first four games in charge (W2 D2 L0), including a 3-1 win over Salernitana last weekend. That result saw his side move two points clear of the relegation zone, and another win here could take them up to 14th in the table by the end of the weekend. 

Meanwhile, Fiorentina have been in a bit of a rut recently and heads into this match having only managed one win in their last six league games. In midweek, they were beaten 2-0 away to Bologna, marking the third match that they have failed to score in during the period. That result left La Viola on 37 points after 24 matches and saw them drop a spot to eighth in the league standings. The major contributor to Fiorentina’s drop-off has been their away record of late, as they are currently on a three-match losing streak on the road and have taken just four points from the last 21 on offer. They will now have to prepare to take on an opponent that they have failed to beat in their last three meetings, with the most recent ending in a 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture back in October. Despite this, the bookies have La Viola down as the favourites in this match.
