Reigning La Liga champions Real Madrid continue the defence of their title when they travel to Elche for league action on Wednesday. Los Blancos are second in the table with 32 points from 15 games; a tally that leaves them level on points with leaders Atletico Madrid, albeit having played two games more. Home side Elche are 16th in the table with 15 points from 13 games, leaving them two points clear of the relegation zone having played two games fewer than their rival strugglers. Zinedine Zidane was supposedly under pressure a month ago when Real Madrid's progress to the last 16 of the Champions League was uncertain. He responded by guiding the side to six straight wins in all competitions. Madrid kept four clean sheets in that sequence, including one in the 2-0 victory at home against Atletico. Much of this recent success is down to the form of Karim Benzema, Madrid's leading light and the joint-top scorer in La Liga. The French forward has four goals in his last three league outings.

Elche are without a win in La Liga since they beat Valencia 2-1 in October to go eighth. Eight matches have passed since that last victory. Although that run is poor, Elche are undefeated in five of their last six home games. The hosts lost on each of the four occasions they played against Madrid, all within the last decade. Four of Madrid's last five away matches featured fewer than three goals. We see this being another low-scoring match, most probably resulting in a clinical win for the away side.
