Egypt - Mozambique: Form Analysis
Egypt come into the tournament as the fifth favourites behind Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Algeria. Ranked fifth among African nations according to FIFA, the Pharaohs are heavily fancied to top Group B ahead of Ghana and progress to the knockout stages at a bare minimum. They arrived in the Ivory Coast with excellent momentum, having beaten Tanzania 2-0 in their warm-up match last weekend. That result marked Egypt’s third consecutive win in all competitions following a 2-0 win over Sierra Leone and a 6-0 drubbing of Djibouti in the CAF World Cup qualifiers. Egypt are now unbeaten in their last five matches and have only tasted defeat once in their last 14 games. Impressively, they kept ten clean sheets in that time and also scored two or more goals in ten of those matches.
Meanwhile, Mozambique enters Group B as the lowest-ranked team in the group at 26th among African nations. As a result, it comes as little surprise to see them showing up as the biggest outsiders to qualify for the knockout stages. The Mambas earned their place in the competition by finishing second in their group during qualifying. Their qualifying group included group winners Senegal, Benin and Rwanda. However, since qualifying, Mozambique have posted a mixed bag of results. They drew 1-1 against Botswana after beating Lesotho 2-0 in their warm-up games and also won one and lost one of their two World Cup qualifiers. The Mambas rely heavily on their defence, but they will be given a thorough examination here by Mohamed Salah and co.
