Egypt will host Malawi on Friday in the first of two back-to-back matches between them in Group D of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers. All four teams in the group are tied on three points after the opening two rounds of play with Malawi in second and Egypt in fourth. Egypt have won five of the 10 total matches against Malawi with two more ending even. No one would have thought that Egypt, the best-ranked nation in the group would be sitting bottom after two matches. But the seven-time African champions find themselves absolutely needing to win this match. Bluntness in attack hindered Rui Vitoria’s men as they managed just one goal from their two matches but coming into this match they have shown considerable improvement, scoring eight goals from their last three friendly matches. Aside from seeking a win, the Pharaohs will also be in search of a huge scoreline which could come handy if goal difference is needed to separate the four teams at the end.

Malawi have three wins against Egypt but the last came back in 2008 during the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup. How they would wish for a similar outcome on Friday. The Flames will use the match to set the tone for the return match next week at home and will probably set up for a draw. Malawi qualified for the last edition of the AFCON in Cameroon and have started these qualifiers with the intent of returning back for the continental showpiece. They have scored two goals and conceded two and this is another match that could see both teams score.
