Ecuador and Peru are set to face off in a game that will go a long way in changing the outlook of Group B of the 2021 Copa America after their recent results. Ecuador got their first point of the competition on Match Day 3 after a 2-2 draw with Venezuela while Peru, against all odds beat Colombia 2-1 to register three points and rise from the bottom of the group. Ecuador should have done better in the game against Venezuela, twice in the match, they took the lead but let it slip. A last minute Ronald Hernandez goal for Venezuela sunk their hearts and now they find themselves bottom of the group. It has been a tough run for Ecuador lately, and they now have no win in their last four matches; in the three that came before the Venezuela draw, they lost. They now have no clean sheet in the last 10 matches, while in the last five, they’ve conceded two in four and failed to score in two. One characteristic in their recent matches is a late collapse; four times in the last five matches, Ecuador have conceded in the final five minutes. Seven of the eight goals they’ve conceded in the last five matches have all come in the second half.

Peru are flying high after their win over Colombia and will be looking to continue with the rise when they take on Ecuador. A Yerry Mina own goal in the second half won the game for Peru after Sergio Pena’s first half opener was leveled out by Miguel Borja’s second half penalty. Peru held on to a nervy end to rise to third place, and two weeks after beating Ecuador in the World Cup qualifiers, they will be eyeing another win over them. For Peru this was a great recovery, having earlier lost 4-0 to Brazil, and being their second win in three matches, they’ll have the right momentum. In their last 11 matches, Peru have not kept a clean sheet, and in each of their last four, the matches have ended in over 2.5 goals. It will be understandable that they have failed to score in three of their last five games – against Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, who are very strong opponents.
