A keen battle for MLS series playoff spots will be on offer when DC United host San Jose Earthquakes at the Audi Field in Washington on Sunday. The hosts are 9th in the Eastern Conference and just a point in hand in the last place for final series playoffs. Meanwhile, the visitors are 8th in the Western Conference with the same points as seventh but only three above the chasing pack for the playoff places. DC United are coming off a 4-0 win over Chicago which was virtually a six-pointer between two playoff chasers in the East. Crucially, that arrested a slide as the hosts were winless in four consecutive games prior – drawing one and losing three. They still remain one of the porous sides in the division with their 38 goals conceded sixth-worst in the Eastern Conference. San Jose are in a tight battle for playoff places themselves, as they start three points behind fifth-placed Houston but only three points ahead of tenth-placed Austin. Goals haven’t been their ally so far as San Jose’s tally of 32 goals is better than just three teams in the West. That said, they did score in nine of their last 11 away MLS matches giving them a solid footing to get on the board here once again.
