Relegated Darmstadt will have their final Bundesliga home game this Sunday when they welcome Hoffenheim at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor. A tough reintroduction to the Bundesliga it has been for Darmstadt who are sure to finish bottom as Hoffenheim eye European football. Darmstadt have managed just three wins all season in the Bundesliga, and are the poorest defensively so far. It got worse for them in their last outing, falling 3-0 away to Wolfsburg. That result took the tally of goals Darmstadt have conceded this season in the Bundesliga to 76. Meanwhile, their scoring touch seems to be abandoning them in these closing stages of the season. They’ve failed to score in four of their last five matches ahead of this game. As a result, they’ve ended up winning just once in those five matches, a 2-0 outcome against fellow strugglers Cologne in April. That win is all they have in the last 25 Bundesliga games. It also happens to be their only clean sheet in 11 league games; six of those 11 games producing over 2.5 goals.

While Germany might have up to eight teams participating in Europe next season, eighth placed Hoffenheim have incentive to target a higher finish. They are a point behind seventh placed Freiburg and under pressure from sides below them. While Darmstadt’s season is over, Hoffenheim still have all to play for in the remaining two matches. Last time out, Hoffenheim took advantage of Leipzig playing with a man down to steal a point in their 1-1 draw. Andrej Kramaric scored in stoppage time, his fourth goal in five matches to rescue Hoffenheim from impending defeat. It was a welcome result for Hoffenheim but they are still in search of a clean sheet 28 games on. Defensively, they’ve been poor in recent matches, conceding 20 goals in just their last eight matches. Hoffenheim have however failed to score in just one of their last 10 matches, netting a total of 18 goals in that run. This run points to high scoring matches; nine of the last 10 returning at least 2.5 goals. The last time these two sides met in Bundesliga action it also ended in high scores as they drew 3-3.
