Crystal Palace’s shaky run in the season persists; they are coming from a 4-0 hammering by Tottenham Hotspur and they will hope to make up for it with a home win over Southampton in the FA Cup. The two meet in one of the all-Premier League clashes lined up for the third round of this competition, with Palace currently on just one win in five games. The failure to score in the Spurs game marked four of five matches in which Patrick Vieira’s team has gone goalless and partly the result three of their last five games have ended in under 2.5 goals. Meanwhile, they’ve conceded two or more goals in two of their last three matches, a concern in defence that they will carry to this game, and they will particularly want to do better in the second half. In their last five matches, Palace have conceded seven goals in the second half. They come into this game having lost two straight home matches and they’ve scored more than a goal in just two of seven matches at home.
Southampton are also struggling and will welcome this break from league action, where another loss to Nottingham Forest ensured they stay bottom of the Premier League table in the new year. They have just one win in the last five matches, that coming in the League Cup game against League One side, Lincoln City. The Saints have six losses in their last nine matches and they haven’t managed a clean sheet in the said nine games. While they have failed to score in just one of their last five matches, it is not to mean they are solid in attack – Southampton have scored more than a goal in just one of their last 15 matches. They come into this game on three straight away losses and having failed to score in four of their last seven away matches. They are winless in the last three meetings with Crystal Palace, the last two having ended in defeats. In their earlier meeting this season, Odsonne Edouard scored the lone goal as Palace claimed three points in their league clash.
