Two of the unsung teams of the Premier League season face off this weekend when Crystal Palace host Sheffield United at Selhurst Park. The Eagles are in 11th place, three points behind The Blades in 8th; the visitors could end the day fifth if other results go their way. A promoted side that many predicted would go straight back down in their first season up, Sheffield United have defied those expectations. Instead of hanging around the relegation zone, they are knocking on the door of the Champions League places. Palace are not a million miles behind and the close fight for European places suggests that the overall quality of the division is improving. With teams like Manchester United and Arsenal suffering through transitionary periods, there is an opportunity for clubs to take the European places previously thought to be their divine right. Palace and Sheffield United are two such teams.
Sheffield United were deserved winners in the reverse fixture, triumphing 1-0 at Bramall Lane. This is a typical scoreline for The Blades and they have won four Premier League games by one goal to nil this season. The goal also came in the second half, as the majority (16) of their 25 goals have. Neither team scores many goals - Palace average less than a goal per game - so rely on a set-up that requires positional disciplined and defensive solidity.
