Crystal Palace lost at Leicester on Saturday and their hopes of European football next season are almost over. They are 13th in the Premier League after Saturday's fixtures and face a tough game home to fourth placed Chelsea. The loss to Leicester was the third straight league defeat for Palace with eight goals conceded and not one scored. Even if seventh was to be good enough to quaify for the Europa League, there is a seven-point gap and it could get wider after this match. Crystal Palace have won six home league games this season but lost the same amount. Two of their last three home league games have been won but three of the last five have been lost.. Palace have lost at home to all of the top three teams in the league and recently lost 4-0 at Liverpool and 3-0 at Leicester. Goals are a big problem for Palace and only once in their last 12 home league fixtures have they scored more than once, that being the 2-1 win over West Ham. Each of their last six home league matches have had under 2.5 goals scored in them and that’s happened in 14 of their 16 home league games.

Chelsea dropped out of the top four for a few hours at the weekend. Manchester United overtook them after hammering seemingly doomed Bournemouth 5-2. However, a 3-0 home win over Watford took Chelsea back into the Champions League places. They have a two-point lead over Manchester United and five over sixth-placed Wolves who lost to resurgent Arsenal. Chelsea lost at West Ham last week and won’t want a repeat of anything like that in this game. They have won eight away league games this season but lost five. Chelsea have scored 33 away league goals this season (only Manchester City have hit more) and that’s 21 more than Palace have scored at home. Actually, it’s seven more than the total number of league goals scored at Selhurst Park this season. Chelsea would love to get a clean sheet in this game. That’s not something that happens much on their Premier League travels. In fact, it’s only happened twice in their last 25, so it’s not all Lampard’s fault. Each of their last seven have seen them concede though and that is his fault. With Palace struggling for form, this looks booked for an away win.
