On matchday 4 in the Brazilian Serie A, we will see Cruzeiro take on Santos at Estadio Raimundo Sampaio on Friday evening. Following a 2-1 loss in their season opener to Corinthians, Cruziero bounced back well to win their next two matches, 1-0 at home to Gremio and 3-0 away to RB Bragantino last weekend. The hosts are currently in sixth place in Serie A, three points behind the early league leaders, Botafogo. Cruzeiro won Serie B convincingly last season and will be delighted by the start they’ve made in their first season back in the big time. The hosts haven’t faced this opponent in league competition since 2019, and they were beaten 4-1 then. However, they will be coming into this one with huge confidence and will fancy their chances against an opponent that has been stumbling in the opening weeks of the season. 

Meanwhile, following consecutive losses at the end of last season, Santos got the 2023 season off in the same vein, losing their opening match 1-0 to Gremio. They followed up with a stalemate in the next match against Atletico Mineiro before their first win last weekend at home to America Mineiro. The visitor’s four points sets them in 11th place on the league table with an even goal difference after their first three matches. Santos struggled to put a run of consistent results together for most of last season, and that also seems to have carried over into this season, with a record of two wins, two draws, and two losses in their last six matches in all competitions. Against a newly promoted side, though, Santos will expect to take something from this match, but will also do well not to underestimate their opponent.
