Coventry City - Middlesbrough: Form Analysis
Coventry City are unbeaten in the last two matches against Middlesbrough and won this very same fixture in the regular season by a solitary goal. They come to this match unbeaten in their last seven matches and drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough on the final day of the regular season to earn a crucial point that sealed their place for the playoffs in just the third season after being promoted from the third tier. Mark Robins’ charges finished fifth with 70 points and just one point above Sunderland who closed out the top six. Having won their last two regular season matches at home, Coventry will be confident of making home advantage count in this tie. The Sky Blues have tasted promotion success via the playoffs as recently as 2018 when they advanced to League One ending a 51-year wait for league promotion. Robins was in charge then and has experience on his side.
Middlesbrough narrowly missed out on the top six last season as they finished five points off the pace. A more sustained run this season saw them finish in fourth place with 75 points and six points in the clear. Michael Carrick’s charges would have finished much higher if not for a dip in form in the latter stages of the regular season that saw them go three matches without a win at the conclusion of the campaign. They will hope to have gotten over that slump so as to seal an advantage here heading to the return match at home next Wednesday. The last time Middlesbrough were in the postseason angling for a return to the Premier League was back in the 2017/18 season where they lost in the semifinals to Aston Villa.

Coventry City & Middlesbrough Squad Analysis
Coventry reported no new injuries at the close of the regular season this past Monday meaning that head coach Mark Robins will have the same squad that was available to him in the 1-1 draw with Boro that was a preview to this playoff semifinal. Gustavo Hamer scored the opener in that clash and should once again be the main threat for the Sky Blues alongside Viktor Gyokeres. Both players occupy the top two positions in Coventry’s scorers’ list, and have scored a combined 32 goals across all competitions.
Chuba Akpom scored 28 goals to finish as top scorer this season and the Middlesbrough striker will hope to continue with his explosive form in front of goal despite going through a dry spell in the final three matches of the season. He and striker Cameron Archer will again be tasked to break down Coventry’s defence. Archer finished the season with 11 goals and scored the equalizer against Coventry on the final day of the season. On the downside though is that the North Yorkshire club is set to be without the services of Dael Fry, Marcus Forss, Aaron Ramsey and Johnny Howson for this first leg match due to injury.
