The Comoros versus Kenya return in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers is set for this Sunday in Moroni, just four days after the two nations battled to a 1-1 draw in Nairobi, Kenya. Hosts Comoros head to the game leading Group G with five points and Kenya are second on three points. In the 10 matches played in this group, eight have ended in draws, and only Comoros have managed to win a game, though Togo and Egypt face off in Cairo on Saturday. Comoros’ win, a 1-0 victory came away in Togo and they will be happy with their results so far, having drawn 0-0 with Egypt before taking on Kenya away. They will be seeking a second win in this game, which will massively boost their hopes of a first ever appearance at the AFCON. Notably, Comoros was the lowest ranked in this group after the draw but they have not trailed in any of their three matches so far and the goal conceded against Kenya was the first in their three matches. They had to play the entire second half with a man down after star man Youssouf M’Changama was sent off in Kenya, having scored the opening goal of the game. Comoros were better organized and will want to finish the job in Moroni on Sunday, having a run of five unbeaten home matches in AFCON qualifiers. Thrice in the last five home matches in AFCON qualifiers, they have managed to score twice. Morocco, Egypt and Cameroon are the African giants that have toured Moroni in the last five AFCON qualifiers and none won.

Kenya were clearly dejected after their draw at home with Comoros; it was their fourth meeting with Comoros and being higher ranked and playing at home, against a 10-man side, the hosts were expected to win easily. It wasn’t to be and that may just have cost them their chance of returning to the AFCON tournament after appearing in 2019. It marked a fourth straight winless outing in AFCON qualifiers and while they have just one loss in the last nine, the run of three straight draws is will not aid much in the qualifiers. In their last 15 AFCON qualifiers, Kenya have managed to score more than a goal in just two matches, and have failed to score completely in six of the 15. They have only three clean sheets in their last 10 AFCON qualification matches but none of these has come in the last four. Kenya have no win in 15 straight AFCON qualification matches away from home, though they do not concede heavily when playing away. In the last 14 away matches in AFCON qualifiers, they have not conceded more than one goal. The biggest concern they carry heading to Moroni is that they don’t score a lot in away matches – they have failed to score in 10 of the last 15 away matches in AFCON qualifiers. It will be worse still, that they do not have their main striker, Japan based Michael Olunga who did not travel for these matches.
