Columbus Crew - Los Angeles FC: Form Analysis
As with most American sports leagues, the teams that catch fire heading into the playoffs are usually the ones who make it to the championship game. Columbus recovered brilliantly after a slow start saw them sitting on a 5-3-6 record after the first 14 matches of the season. The next 20 fixtures would see Wilfried Nancy’s men go 11-6-3 en route to securing the three seed in the Eastern Conference. Columbus advanced to this stage thanks to a heartstopping comeback victory which saw them overturn a 2-0 halftime deficit. The Crew stormed back in the second 45 minutes, ultimately bagging the equalizer through Diego Rossi in the 86th minute. Christian Ramirez would then go on to net the winner with five minutes remaining in extra time to send Columbus to the MLS Cup Final. The Crew, who have banged in the most goals in the MLS at 80, have won five of their last six appearances.
LAFC look to be peaking at the perfect time after a somewhat subdued regular season saw them finish 15 points off their mark from the previous campaign. Still, the Black and Gold have shown their championship pedigree all season long as they have managed to get the results when they matter the most. Los Angeles advanced to the final following a comfortable 2-0 home win over the Houston Dynamo in the Western Conference Finals. The result extended LAFC’s unbeaten run to seven games, six of which have resulted in victories. The defending champions have really stepped their defensive game up a notch and have now kept three consecutive clean sheets.

Columbus Crew & Los Angeles FC Squad Analysis
Crew boss Wilfried Nancy is almost certain to go with a near identical starting 11 to the one that defeated Cincinnati FC in the East Final. Christian Ramirez, who has scored the winning goal in the last two matches for Columbus, will likely continue in his ‘super-sub’ role. The front three of Cucho Hernandez, Diego Rossi and Alexandru Matan is one of the deadliest in the league. Hernandez bagged 20 goals while Diego Rossi has hit the ground running in his return to the MLS with five goals and five assists in 15 matches. The only player missing for the home team ahead of this final is defender Will Sands.
LAFC manager Steve Cherundolo has no fresh injury concerns to deal with and is also likely to name an identical starting 11 to the one that faced Houston. The brightest of the LAFC stars are undoubtedly forwards Carlos Vela and Denis Bouanga. The former is the club record goalscorer with 93 goals in 187 appearances while the latter is the current MLS Golden Boot holder after netting 24 goals this season. Bouanga has been tremendous this campaign, scoring a total of 38 goals across all of LAFC’s competitions and is one shy of Vela’s previous record of 39. Interestingly, LAFC’s second all-time leading goalscorer is lining up for the opposition in Diego Rossi who netted 59 in his 121 career matches with the Black and Gold.
