Clermont will host Lyon in the penultimate round of the French Ligue 1 in a game of utmost importance on both ends of the table. As Clermont look to avoid automatic relegation, Lyon are battling for a place in Europe next season. Both teams started the season on the wrong footing but Clermont have failed to hit top gear and are confined to the bottom three. Going into Match Day 33, they are last in the standings, with 25 points, four below Metz in the relegation playoff spot. To avoid automatic relegation, at least in this round, Clermont must win this game. It will still be a tall order staying up, as they face 17th placed Lorient in their final game. Their fate is no longer in their hands but two wins in the final two matches would really help. Hopes of recovery after their 4-1 win over Reims were quickly extinguished in a 4-1 loss to Monaco last time out. Muhammad Cham’s sixth goal in seven matches counted for little after Monaco responded to Clermont’s equalizer with three goals. At the end of it, Clermont were left with just five wins in their opening 32 league matches. They’ve also scored the fewest goals in the league (26) and won just three of their 16 home matches.

At the height of Lyon’s struggles in the early stages of this season, they suffered a 2-1 home loss to Clermont. Their hosts have been some sort of bogey team, beating them in each of the last three meetings now. In the last five matches between these two sides, Lyon managed just one win. However, they come here with the better form and should end their bad run in this fixture. In their last four matches, Lyon were up against sides in the top four, and they only lost to PSG. They beat all the rest, with the most recent being Lille in a dramatic seven-goal thriller. Four goals in the final 25 minutes of that match saw Lyon rise from 2-0 to win 4-3. Lyon have been a different side in 2024, particularly from February. In their last 13 league matches in that period, they bagged 31 of a possible 39 points, only losing twice. They have especially upped the ante in attack, scoring 15 times in the last five matches. The only downside for them is that they have no clean sheet in their last seven matches. Pierre Sage’s side conceded 13 times in the last five matches.
