After almost two months, Chippa United and Cape Town City will resume PSL duty when they face off on Friday evening. The hosts are in 13th place in the league standings, while the visitors are second. After barely escaping relegation last term, Chippa United look as though they are going to battle the drop again this season. They are on 18 points after 16 matches, just five points above Richards Bay, who occupy the relegation playoff spot. The Chilli Boys ended last year with a 2-0 loss to TS Galaxy, which confirmed that they had only earned three points in four matches in December. Those three points came courtesy of a 2-0 win over Golden Arrows, and that was also the only victory they had posted in nine matches in all competitions, dating back to the start of October. Chippa lost 2-0 to this opponent in the reverse fixture and are the underdogs heading into this contest.
Meanwhile, Cape Town City secured a much-needed 2-0 win over cross-town rivals Cape Town Spurs on New Year's Eve to avoid a third league match without victory following a 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch and a stalemate against league leaders Sundowns. They will resume their league campaign with 29 points in 16 games, level with third-placed Supersport United and nine points behind the Brazilians. The Citizens struggled on the road at the start of the season, winning only one of their first five away games, but they have shown tremendous improvement since the start of October, winning four of their last five and maintaining four clean sheets in that time. The visitors are carrying all the momentum into this match and will be confident that they can get another three points in this one.
