Chelsea continued their fine run with a comfortable win over Rennes in the Champions League and now the focus shifts back to the Premier League with a home match against Sheffield United this weekend. The Blues have so far managed 12 points and are seventh in the standings while Sheffield are 19th with one point from seven matches. Chelsea will be aiming to rise to second place after this match and their recent form suggests they are the favorites here. By beating Rennes 3-0, the West London side set a fifth straight clean sheet and registered a third straight win. They are now unbeaten in the last seven matches and after their loss to Liverpool earlier in the season, they have been somewhat stable. They have swept away their opponents in the Champions League but in the Premier League, they still have a point to prove. Twice in their last five league matches the Blues have conceded three goals, but they will take a lot of credit for a much improved defence now, and with every match they seem to have found that stability. A good balance between attack and defence is paying off, with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and striker Timo Werner delivering as required. Their only concern going to the weekend will be Kai Havertz’s absence after a positive Covid-19 test. However, with 10 goals in their last three matches, and Werner scoring four of them, we doubt Kai will be missed. The last home league match left an egg in Chelsea’s face as they lost a comfortable lead to draw 3-3 with Southampton. It was the second time they dropped points at home, after earlier losing to Liverpool, and Chelsea are keen to make Stamford Bridge a fortress again. In their last nine league matches at home, Chelsea have won seven.

Sheffield United on the other hand, are still in search of their first win of the season. They have played eight matches this season and none has ended well, with their only point in the league coming from the draw with another struggling side – Fulham. They have also failed to keep a clean sheet in their matches this season, though they seem to have some defensive discipline, which prevents them from conceding a lot of goals. Sheffield have conceded one goal or less in five of their eight matches in the season, and as a result, only two of their matches have ended in over 2.5 goals. They put up a strong showing against Manchester City in their last game, though they lost 1-0 and this clash will be the third straight in which they are facing a title contender, after earlier losing to Liverpool. This is a game Sheffield would have loved to play at home, having beaten Chelsea at Bramall Lane 3-0 last season. They don’t have that comfort and it will be worse for them looking at their away run in the league; they have no win, and seven losses in their last nine.
