Chelsea had a poor start to the season but they have improved a great deal and go to the weekend placed fifth on the league table with 14 points, six ahead of their opponents, 16th placed Newcastle United. Chelsea will be playing at home, where they have managed two wins in the last two matches and going into the match on the back of four straight wins, they will be well charged for it. Whereas they didn’t have a great start to the season, Chelsea have failed to score in just two of the 12 matches they have played in the current season. They have scored 15 in the last four matches, though they will have to improve defensively, having kept just one clean sheet in the 12 matches they have played in the season. The fresh breath of confidence at Chelsea is clear in their improvement in the recent matches; they have more wins in the last four matches than they managed in the last seven and are scoring too. They have also beaten Newcastle in five of their last six matches, from 2016 to date, scoring two or more goals in each of these games. Chelsea went winless in their opening four home matches of the season but they have really improved, and in the last two at home they have scored nine goals and conceded one. One of the two was however against a much weaker team but they will reap from the confidence gained. Having just one clean sheet in the home run will however be a major concern.

On the other hand, Newcastle United will be seeking a second straight win after beating Manchester United ahead of the international break. This season, Newcastle have beaten Tottenham Hotspurs as well and lost narrowly to Arsenal so they will feel they have what it takes to face the top sides in the Premier League. A bad start to the season has left Newcastle low on the log and the prospects don’t look so good on them as they go to this game. They have one win in eight meetings with Chelsea and they go to this game on just two wins in nine matches this season. While they managed a win away to Tottenham, at a fairly tough venue, they have not been the best away from home. In the four away league matches this season, Newcastle have lost three, and by three or more goals. They have scored three goals in four away league matches this season but have conceded 11 and kept just one clean sheet. In their last two away matches, Newcastle lost 5-0 to Leicester City and 3-1 to Liverpool; here they meet another superior opponent and they will be hoping to do better.
