Chelsea - Middlesbrough: Form Analysis
Chelsea may trail 1-0 from the first leg, but their current form across all competitions is good. That defeat at the Riverside was their only loss in the last five games and they have won all the other four including a 1-0 local derby victory over Fulham in the Premier League last time out. They are unbeaten in their last five League Cup games at Stamford Bridge, winning four of those and drawing one. While Chelsea's away form has proven problematic (they have lost four of their last five on the road), they have not lost any of their last seven games at home, winning six (one on penalties in the quarter final of this competition against Newcastle) . Their only draw in that run at home came in the 4-4 epic against Manchester City in the Premier League. The Blues have won the EFL Cup five times, most recently in 2015. They have also been runner-up on four occasions, last time in 2022 when they lost on penalties to Liverpool. In fact, one of Chelsea's Final successes in this competition was a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough in 1998 when extra time goals from Frank Sinclair and Roberto Di Matteo handed them the trophy.
After losing at home to Coventry in the league and then in the FA Cup third round to Aston Villa, Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick will be pleased with how his team responded. A battling 1-0 victory over Chelsea gave them something to hang onto in the second leg and they followed that with an excellent 3-1 win on the road against Millwall at the weekend. That win keeps 'Boro in the playoff hunt in the Championship but their focus will be on securing a Wembley place in this game. The problem Boro have is that their record at Stamford Bridge is dismal. Their last win at Stamford Bridge was a 2-1 win back in 1975. It is not surprising to see that Middlesbrough are the rank outsiders to progress from the second leg but given the up and down nature of Chelsea's season so far, the home fans will still be nervous about whether they can mount a comeback and reach Wembley once again.

Chelsea & Middlesbrough Squad Analysis
There is some positive news for Chelsea on the injury front. Carney Chukwumeka and Ben Chilwell returned to first team action as substitutes in the weekend win over Fulham, while Benoit Badiashile made the bench, although did not make it onto the field in that game. Christopher Nkunku is also expected to be fit after his hip injury sustained against Luton proved to be a minor issue. Despite that, the home side will still be without several players for the game including long-term absentees Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana, plus club captain Reece James, 'keeper Robert Sanchez, defenders Trevor Chalobah and Lesley Ugochukwu and midfielder Romeo Lavia will all be out. Cole Palmer will start and he continues to be the brightest spark for Chelsea this season, contributing nine goals in the Premier League from midfield, though he will want to put his misses from the first leg of this tie out of his mind before the second leg kicks off.
Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick received a boost when striker Josh Coburn made a return from injury as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Rotherham at the weekend. However Emmanuel Latte Lath did not feature and is unlikely to do so in the second leg. Marcus Forss made his second substitute appearance in the week as he recovered from injury and could be in line for a place in the team. The visitors will also be without Sammy Silvera and Riley McGree who are both away on international duty, while Alex Bangura is not expected to play after being injured in the first leg of this tie. Morgan Rogers has served his suspension in the first leg and should be available for the second leg while new signings Finn Azaz and Luke Ayling could also be in contention.
The game promises to be an intriguing one with both sides heading into the game knowing they are just a solid performance and 90 minutes away from a Wembley final. Middlesbrough have been bullish about their chances of success in the run up to the game but Chelsea, having spent over a billion pounds on players in the tenure of new CEO Todd Boehly, will be hoping for at least some kind of return on that investment with an appearance in the finale in February.
