When Chelsea take their stock for the month of December, manager Frank Lampard will be utterly disappointed with the poor run his charges have had, and especially in the last five matches. Tammy Abraham got their consolation goal against Arsenal in the 3-1 loss, making it his third goal in two matches and perhaps that is the biggest positive they take back home. With Hakim Ziyech injured, the creativity has been missing and Lampard will need to create a fix ahead of the Villa game. The Blues will be happy to be back home though, having gone unbeaten in the last six matches at their backyard, and winning four of them. In their last 17 home matches across all competitions, Chelsea have suffered only one loss, and won 12. They have scored two goals or more in five of their last seven home matches in the league and in the last five home league matches, they have scored 13 goals and conceded five. Going to this game, Chelsea have six straight wins over Aston Villa.

While Chelsea suffered in the London derby on Boxing Day, Villa were having an easy time against another London side, Crystal Palace. Despite going a man down towards the end of the first half, Villa managed to beat Palace 3-0 and their last two goals came after Tyrone Mings’ sending off. The Birmingham side now has three wins in the last four matches and remains unbeaten in four, with four straight clean sheets. Aston Villa have also scored six goals in the last two matches and only failed to score once in their last eight matches. While they ponder over Mings’ suspension, Villa will be hoping Anwar El Ghazi’s hot streak continues after scoring four goals in the last four matches. Another thing they will also be hoping extends, is their away record. The visitors go to this game on four wins in the last five away matches. They have scored in each of the last 10 away matches, and won seven and lost once. In the Premier League, towards the end of last season, they failed to win any of their last eight away matches but so far this season, they have already won five of the six away league matches.
