It came as a shock as Rangers lost 2-0 at home to Slavia Prague in the Europa League, missing out on a place in the quarters. The mission now is to quickly switch back to the Premiership, where they are set for an away game against arch rivals Celtic. Hosts Celtic are second in the standings, with 68 points and Rangers top with 88 points. This match will not change much in terms of the two sides’ positioning and neither will it affect the face of the championship. Rangers have already won the title and it is more of a contest for bragging rights, which Celtic have not had so much lately, with three straight losses to Rangers. Celtic have three clean sheets in their last four matches but scored more than a goal in just one of the last six matches. They’ve failed to score in two of the last three and in the last 10 matches, they have two losses and seven wins. At home, going to this game, the team has three straight wins but in only two of their last seven home matches in the league have they been able to score more than a goal. Celtic have been second best to Rangers in many aspects this season, including their defensive and attacking returns. The hosts have scored 65 goals and conceded 23 so far.
Rangers are the best in attack with 77 goals, and defensively, they are unbeaten in the 32 matches played and have conceded just nine times. Last week Rangers celebrated their first league title in 10 years, breaking Celtic’s dominance in the league, but have failed to win any of the two matches coming after the celebrations. They’ve been dumped out of the Europa League after a 2-0 home loss to Slavia Prague and Steven Gerrard will consider this a big loss, given their form in Europe before the loss. One area the manager will be keen to deal with is the discipline of his players; tempers flared in the midweek loss that saw his two men sent off, making a comeback impossible. Rangers have blown away teams this season and away from home in the Premiership, they have 12 wins in the last 16.
