Celtic had a shock home loss in the Champions League on Wednesday and will be looking to recover when they return to domestic action with a home game against Motherwell on Sunday. Ahead of the game, Celtic, who have two games in hand, have seven points and are in fourth place while Motherwell, winless in five, have two points and are placed 10th. Celtic’s Champions League hopes were crushed in the 2-1 loss to Hungarian side Ferencvaros and now their focus shifts to domestic action where they will be looking to close in on leaders Rangers. In their last league match, they improved from their draw with Kilmarnock, beating Dundee United 1-0 but generally, by their standards, it has been a slow start to the season. While they have had two big wins, Celtic have managed just two clean sheets in their five matches across all competitions so far. Their dominance in the Scottish Premier League is however not in doubt. In 2020, Celtic have played 13 league matches, and they are unbeaten in all these, with 11 wins and having scored two or more goals in 11. They have been even better when playing at home in the league, and carry a run of five straight wins here, having scored at least three goals in each of these. In their opening home game of the season, Celtic hit Hamilton Academical 5-1, with Odsonne Edouard scoring three, and it was the third time in four home matches in the league that they scored five. Unbeaten in 17 straight matches against Motherwell, and playing at home, Celtic will be strong favorites here.

Motherwell are still in search of their first win of the season. From their opening five matches, they have two points, from draws with Livingston and Hibernian. They have just one clean sheet in the season and on the league table, they are only better than Kilmarnock and Livingston on goal difference. In their last 13 league matches, they have one win, and they have failed to score in four of their last five matches. Away from home, they are winless in six league matches and have failed to score in four of those. One of their two points so far this season, was registered away from home, in the 0-0 draw with Hibernian and having failed to score in the last two meetings with Celtic, they will want to improve on their opening two away games. In their last five matches against Celtic, Motherwell have conceded three or more in four matches, while they have scored thrice in the five matches. The last time Motherwell beat Celtic was back in 2015, which remains their only win in the last 26 meetings with the Scottish giants.
