Castellon have two matches to save their Segunda Division status as the league goes into the penultimate stage. They will be hosting promotion hopefuls Rayo Vallecano in the 41st round of matches in the league. Castellon have 41 points and are three points below 18th, which is the safety line they target hitting, on the other hand, Rayo are on 64 points, placed seventh and targeting a playoff spot. Castellon are coming from three straight losses, the most recent a 3-0 fall away to Real Zaragoza and have failed to score in the last four matches, which complicates their survival push. They have no win in five straight league matches and haven’t managed more than a goal in their last 11 league games. Castellon had gone on a good run at home, winning two and drawing one, but they couldn’t sustain it going into their fourth home game, losing 2-0 to Ponferradina.

Rayo Vallecano are tied on points with sixth placed Sporting Gijon and only their loss to Gijon is keeping them out of the promotion playoff spots. To stay in this hunt, they must win this game against Castellon and target a home win over another relegation threatened side, Lugo, in their last game of the season. Back to back wins over Real Oviedo and Fuenlabrada have swung Vallecano back into the promotion equation, after earlier going winless in five matches. They will look to build on the wins as they hope a team among the four right above them falters. While they need a win here, it hasn’t been all great for Rayo in their away matches in Segunda Division. In the 20 played this season, they’ve managed just seven wins but they have three wins in the last five.
