Cape Verde Isl. - South Africa: Form Analysis
Cape Verde are one win away from recording their best-ever result at the African Cup of Nations. The Blue Sharks have never advanced past the quarterfinals and have only once before qualified for the last eight. This was in 2013 during the old format of the competition where only 16 teams qualified for the tournament. Coincidentally, this was the first team that Cape Verde and South Africa clashed at the AFCON. The two teams were pooled together in the group stages and played out a 0-0 draw. Since then, Cape Verde have won the other two times the two nations have met. The Island nation won 2-1 both home and away in World Cup qualifying in 2017. Bubista’s men, who are representing their country in their fourth AFCON appearance, are unbeaten in Ivory Coast. They have won three of their four matches and defeated Mauritania 1-0 last time out.
South Africa are a sleeping giant of African football that seems to have awakened. The 1996 AFCON champions will now seek to qualify for the semifinals for the first time in 24 years. South Africa failed to qualify for the Nations Cup four times in the last seven editions. They missed the previous tournament in Cameroon in 2021. Bafana Bafana have bounced back exceptionally after losing their tournament opener. Hugo Broos’ charges fell 2-0 to Mali to begin their group campaign. But since then they haven’t lost nor have they conceded a goal in three outings. They have won twice with one of those victories being a 2-0 success over heavy favourites Morocco. The 65th-ranked nation globally has grown with each match in Ivory Coast and will arrive here fully confident of a win. Also having a coach that has won the tournament before adds to strengthening belief in this team. Broos won the Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2017.

Cape Verde Isl. & South Africa Squad Analysis
Cape Verde have shown good balance across the pitch. They have been excellent in attack and have scored in every game. Their defence has also been impressive, keeping two clean sheets thus far. Thirty-four-year-old Ryan Mendes has been one of their standout players at the AFCON. The winger has scored twice in the competition. His late penalty put Mauritania to the sword in the second round. Seven players have scored eight of Cape Verde’s goals, making them a difficult team to pin down. Others to look out for here are Bebe, Jovane Cabral and Jamiro Monteiro.
While Cape Verde’s squad is filled with players plying their trades all across the world, South Africa’s is more locally based. Only three of the entire 26-man squad play outside the South African PSL. Two of those are Al Ahly’s Percy Tau and Tondela’s Sphephelo Sithole who have been the more constant fixtures in Ivory Coast. Tau, scorer of 16 international goals, has one goal so far in the competition. Five players have scored for Bafana Bafana at the AFCON with Themba Zwane leading the way with two goals. Hugo Broos’ men have also shown good balance across the pitch but have been more impressive in defence. They have kept three successive clean sheets and the back five including the goalkeeper has remained the same in this run. All five players play for Mamelodi Sundowns. This familiarity has immensely worked in the team’s favour.
